I have to admit, I had no idea what this book was about when I started reading it. I had never read anything by Neil Gaiman before so I didn’t know his style or the way he constructs his stories.
So let me start this review by saying this: Neil Gaiman is a genius!
This book is incredible. I wasn’t prepared for parallel worlds and monsters but they went perfectly with the characters who lived in ‘the normal world’.
This is the story of both Neil Gaiman (because there are a lot of his childhood memories in this book) and .. It’s only now that I realize that the boy in the book doesn’t have a name.. Awkward…
At the end of the lane, there’s a farm. The Hempstocks have been living there probably since the beginning of time. When this boy meets Lettie, who lives on the farm, some very bad things happen. And the housekeeper with the cruel smile might not be who or what she seems.
I really don’t want to give to much away. This is a book that will grab a hold of you and will not let you go and you should let it suprise you.
I read this in two days, I just had to keep reading. There are so many amazing quotes in this book but I made myself choose one.
“I liked myths. They weren’t adult stories and they weren’t children’s stories. They were better than that. They just were.”
It’s true for this book as well, I really think it’s a story for everyone, young, old, bookaddict or one book a year.. You should really give it a go!
As for me, I’ll definately keep reading this man’s books. Neverwhere and Stardust are officially on my TBR-list!
